Jain Matrimony

Jain matrimony is deeply aligned with the five Jain vows — Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, Brahmacharya, and Aparigraha — practised to varying degrees across Jain sub-communities. Marriage is seen as a sacred commitment to shared Dharma, and compatibility in spiritual practice, dietary observance, and community tradition is as important as personality and professional background. The two main Jain sects — Digambar and Shwetambar — have distinct Vivah customs, Gotra systems, and temple traditions, and most families prefer to marry within their sect.

Gotra matching is followed across most Jain communities — particularly Oswal, Khandelwal, and Porwal families. Same-Gotra marriage is prohibited, and some families additionally observe Gotravali restrictions (avoiding extended clan overlap). The Vivah ceremony incorporates Jain Agamic texts alongside Vedic Saptapadi elements, and invocations to the Tirthankaras (Jain saints) are central to the ceremony. Paryushana — the annual festival of inner reflection — is the most sacred time in the Jain calendar, and most families avoid scheduling Vivah events during this period.

Jain families are concentrated in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka, with a globally distributed business diaspora in the USA, UK, Australia, and Singapore. Dietary alignment — including vegetarianism, night fasting, and avoidance of root vegetables in stricter families — is a critical filter in Jain matrimony.
