The Jain Business Communities: Oswal, Porwal, Shrimali
The Jain business communities of Rajasthan and Gujarat — Oswal, Porwal, Shrimali, Khandelwal, and Agarwal Jain — are among India's wealthiest and most commercially influential communities. They trace their Jain conversion to historical periods when their ancestors accepted the Jain faith under the influence of prominent Jain saints.
Oswal Jains take their name from the city of Osian in Rajasthan. They have 18 main Gotras (or Nakhs) and are the largest single Jain community. Many prominent Jain business families (Birla, Mittal, Damani) are Oswal. Porwal Jains claim origins in Porwal (MP); Shrimali Jains originate from Bhinmal (Rajasthan — formerly Shrimal). Khandelwal Jains originated in Khandela, Rajasthan.
Marriage Traditions and Matching
The wedding traditions of these business Jain communities closely follow the Digambar or Shvetambar traditions described above, with a strong Rajasthani cultural overlay: elaborate ceremonies, multi-day celebrations, professional decorators, and large guest lists.
Gotra (Nakh) matching is the first priority. For Oswal families, the 18 Nakhs are closely parallel to the 18 Agarwal Gotras — inter-community marriage between Oswal Jain and Agarwal Hindu/Jain families is relatively common when both are vegetarian. For Khandelwal and Shrimali families, their respective Gotra lists are checked.
Many Oswal and Porwal families are now multi-generational city dwellers (Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata) or NRIs in the UK, US, Kenya, and Australia. Online matrimony platforms have become the primary channel for finding matches in these diaspora communities.
What These Families Look For
Beyond strict Jain vegetarianism and sect compatibility, Oswal, Porwal, and Shrimali families value: business background and financial stability (business families tend to prefer business families); educational achievement; NRI status (for diaspora families, overseas-based matches are often preferred); temple participation and Jain community involvement; and the partner's family's lifestyle alignment with Jain values.
