Jat matrimony in North India is governed by one of the strictest Gotra exclusion systems in Hindu tradition — the Chaar-Gotra (four-Gotra) rule. A Jat Hindu cannot marry someone who shares any of four Gotras: their own (father's), their mother's natal Gotra, their father's mother's Gotra, and their mother's mother's Gotra. This four-generation lateral exclusion ensures that marriage occurs outside all branches of known ancestral overlap. The Jat matrimonial process includes the Milni (family-to-family meeting) before the formal engagement, followed by the Sagai and Tilak ceremony.
