What is Nadi Dosha (Nadi Koota)?

Nadi Koota is the eighth and highest-weighted test in Ashtakuta Guna Milan, carrying 8 points out of 36. It checks whether the birth Nakshatras of the two partners belong to the same Nadi (life-force category). There are three Nadis — Adi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta), and Antya (Kapha). If both partners share the same Nadi, it is called Nadi Dosha — traditionally considered the most serious form of Guna Milan conflict.

Why It Matters for Marriage

Nadi represents the physiological and constitutional nature in Vedic tradition. Same-Nadi pairing was traditionally associated with health issues, difficulty in having children, or incompatibility in physical temperament. Because it carries the most points (8 out of 36), Nadi Dosha has an outsized effect on the total Guna score — and it also has well-established cancellation rules that many families overlook.

The Three Nadis and Their Nakshatras

Every Nakshatra belongs to one of three Nadis: • Adi Nadi (Vata): Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Moola, Shatabisha, Poorva Bhadrapada • Madhya Nadi (Pitta): Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Poorva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Poorvashada, Dhanishtha, Uttara Bhadrapada • Antya Nadi (Kapha): Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttarashada, Shravana, Revati If both partners' birth Nakshatras fall in the same Nadi, Nadi Dosha applies and the score is 0.

Impact on Guna Score

Nadi Koota carries 8 points — more than any other Koota. This means: • Same Nadi (Dosha present) = 0 points out of a possible 8 • Different Nadi = 8 points (full score) A couple with Nadi Dosha and otherwise good compatibility may still score 20–22 out of 36, which some families consider acceptable — especially when cancellation rules apply.

When is Nadi Dosha Cancelled?

Nadi Dosha is traditionally considered cancelled when: • Both partners' Nakshatras are the same (same Nakshatra but different Padas can apply) • Both partners have the same Rasi (Moon sign) but different Nakshatras • The Nakshatra lords of both partners are the same planet • The Navamsa Lagna or Janma Lagna is the same for both • Both partners have the same Rasi lord A qualified Jyotishi should confirm whether cancellation applies to your specific chart combination.

Common Misconceptions

Nadi Dosha means the marriage should never happen.

Reality:Nadi Dosha is serious in classical texts, but it has specific cancellation rules that apply in many cases. The overall chart quality, Guna total, and whether cancellation rules apply matter far more than any single Dosha in isolation.

Same Nakshatra always means Nadi Dosha.

Reality:Same Nakshatra is actually one of the cancellation rules for Nadi Dosha in many classical Jyotisha traditions. The situation is nuanced — a Jyotishi should evaluate same-Nakshatra cases individually rather than applying a blanket rule.

Nadi Dosha always causes childlessness.

Reality:Classical texts mention concern about progeny, but this is one perspective among many. D1 and D9 chart analysis of the 5th house gives a much more detailed and accurate picture of children-related factors than Nadi Dosha alone.
