Anand Karaj — The Sikh Wedding Ceremony Explained

VaidikVivah·1 May 2025·5 min read

A complete guide to Anand Karaj, the Sikh wedding ceremony — the four Lavan, role of the Granthi, significance of the Ardas, and what families should know when planning a Sikh wedding.

What is Anand Karaj?

"Anand Karaj" means "Blissful Union" in Punjabi. It is the official Sikh marriage ceremony, conducted in the presence of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji — the eternal living Guru of the Sikhs. Anand Karaj was formalised by the Sikh Gurdwaras Act of 1925 and is the only recognised marriage ceremony for Sikhs in India. It is a spiritual ceremony focused on the couple's union with Waheguru (God) through the Guru's shabad (divine word) — not merely a social contract.

Before the Ceremony — Milni and Ardas

Milni: The formal meeting of both families, usually on the morning of the wedding. The groom's family is received by the bride's family at the Gurdwara entrance. Senior members from both sides exchange garlands or gifts (siropaos) and embrace. A short Ardas (prayer) marks the occasion. Ardas: A standing congregational prayer offered before any significant Sikh ceremony. The Granthi (Gurdwara priest or officiant) leads the Ardas, seeking Waheguru's blessings for the occasion. The entire sangat (congregation) responds with "Waheguru."

The Four Lavan — The Heart of Anand Karaj

The central act of Anand Karaj is the reading and circumambulation of the four Lavan (stanzas) composed by Guru Ram Das Ji in the Suhi Raag of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (Ang 773-774). Each Lav describes a stage of the soul's journey toward union with Waheguru. Lav 1 — Householder Duties (Grihastha): The first round establishes the couple's worldly duties — respect for family, service, and following the Guru's teachings in daily life. As the Granthi reads the Lav, the couple circles the Guru Granth Sahib clockwise, led by the groom. The congregation sings the same Lav. Lav 2 — The Meeting of the Divine: The second round marks growing spiritual awareness. The couple is asked to move beyond ego and encounter the Divine through the Satguru (True Guru). The couple circles again as the shabad is sung. Lav 3 — Detachment and Devotion: The third round signifies renunciation of the ego and full devotion to the Waheguru. This is often the most emotional round — many families and congregation members are moved by the beauty of the kirtan. Lav 4 — The Union is Complete: The fourth and final Lav announces the soul's complete union with Waheguru. The couple has now formally completed their Anand Karaj. The congregation sings joyfully.

After the Lavan — Anand Sahib and Ardas

After the four Lavan, the Granthi reads the first five and last stanza of Anand Sahib (40 stanzas of bliss composed by Guru Amar Das Ji). This is followed by the final Ardas, after which a Hukamnama (random reading from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib) is taken — this is Waheguru's "command" or blessing for the couple. The ceremony ends with distribution of Karah Parshad (sacred pudding made of wheat flour, ghee, and sugar) to all present.

Practical Notes for Families

Venue: Anand Karaj must be performed in the presence of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Most families hold it in a Gurdwara. Some arrange for the Granth Sahib to be brought to a private venue, though this requires approval from the managing committee. Dress: The groom typically wears a turban (pagri) of the bride's family colour, sherwani or suit. The bride wears a salwar kameez or lehenga — red, pink, or pink-gold are traditional. Head covering (chunni) is mandatory for all inside the Darbar Sahib. Ring ceremony: The exchange of rings is a pre-ceremony tradition (not part of Anand Karaj itself) — it may happen the day before or in a separate space. Time: Anand Karaj is performed only during daytime — from sunrise to sunset. Nighttime ceremonies are not permitted in most traditional Gurdwaras.
